Notes From the Boss

Creating the Perfect Shareable Photos

We’re in the middle of a great transformation in social media right now. Well, it’s been happening for quite some time now, but few have yet to catch on.

If you haven’t noticed: It’s all about pictures! Sites like Instagram and Pinterest are capitalizing off of our new fetish for photos.

Pictures are quick way to communicate a LOT of information. You have to get to the point, because users these days are pressed for time. And why shouldn’t they be? Time is quite valuable. Your marketing strategies have to evolve with your audience or you risk losing them. It’s a tough, but real, truth.

Here’s a glimpse of just how important photos are; let’s look at some numbers. Over 3500 pictures are uploaded to Facebook every second. They bring in the highest number of engagement. Additionally, all of the networks have been updating their features to accommodate this trend. Facebook handed over $730 million dollars to buy Instagram. If pictures weren’t all that important, I seriously doubt that deal would have never transpired.

Now it’s your turn to cash in on the trend. Pics are hot on all sites, Twitter, Facebook, all of them. You have to know how to make your content go viral though, but it’s not as difficult as it may seem. There are some tricks that can help.

3 Steps to Networking Success

There are rules to this game, just like any other. They’re simple, yet often overlooked by the players. Who really reads the rules before playing a game anyway, right? Nobody I know.

Rule books and instruction manuals are just a waste of paper. They contain everything you could possibly need to know to win, but people refuse to take the time to read them.

Hopefully, this condensed version of the networking rulebook will help. Yes, networking is a game, a contact sport to be specific, but we’ll get into those details later.

Too frequently, we assume that we know the rules, but fail miserably when it’s our turn to play. Networking is not just about getting your business card in the right hands; that’s the least important part of the whole game. Yet somehow, many have been convinced that tossing their business cards to as many people as possible is the way to victory. NOT! We call that "drive-by networking" around here, and that’s a one-way ticket to loserville in our opinion.

If you want to win at this game, follow these 3 easy steps:

The Marilyn Monroe Effect: How to Turn on the Charm While Networking

There was something about that Marilyn Monroe.

She was  savvy, gorgeous, alluring, and powerful. She was the ideal example of a modern day Helen of Troy.

Many people feel that Ms. Marilyn became wildly successful because of her voluptuous figure and bouncy  blonde tresses.  Although that assumption may have to be given a lot of merit, I believe Marilyn’s rise to fame had something to do with another undiscussed factor: her clever use of non-verbal communication.

There were countless other attractive, working women in show business during this time, but Marilyn was the one that was able to win the affection of tender hearted teenage boys, and  captivate the fantasies of grown men.

How did she accomplish this? Well, after paying  very close attention, I noticed she possessed the natural ability to channel her inner lover and develope a magnetic presence that was damn near irresistible to everyone that laid eyes on her. The power of her effect was being able to say so much without uttering a single word.

So what does Marilyn Monroe have to do with how you network as a woman in business? A LOT!

As an entreprenueress, you are constantly networking with individuals everywhere you go. Everyone, from the cashier at the office supply store to a high profile potential client at a networking  gala, is constantly picking up on your energy. So, as a networker you have to always be cognizant of the vibes and energy you give off to the people around you.

7 Steps to Productivity Success: How to Complete Everything on Your To-Do List

As women entrepreneurs, we are always waging war against the clock.

We know that there are only 24 hours in a day, so in an effort to complete

as many tasks as humanly possible, we often cram too many into our schedules.

Needless to say, the end result is…TRAGIC. We become terribly overwhelmed at the thought of

the work that awaits us, and usually only accomplish a small portion of what we set

out to do.

That frustration begins to fester and you can’t help but to envy those business

owners that have managed to conquer the world (or could afford to hire Harry Potter

as there personal assistant). Just kidding. But you get the drift.

Goal Setting with Zig Ziglar

On November 28, 2012, the incomparable Zig Ziglar, 86, died of pneumonia at a hospital in Dallas, Texas. The motivational speaker’s greatest gift was the ability to encourage others to believe in themselves, and for that he will never be forgotten.

One of the most influential videos of my LIFE was Ziglar’s presentation about the importance of setting goals. After I discovered “the formula”, manifesting my goals became a much simpler task. He takes you step by step through the process, but your success lies the follow through. You have to have a map, and stick to the route that is leading to your destination.

Zig Ziglar’s Goal Setting Formula:

1. Write down your objective.

In order to complete a goal, you have to make sure you have a clear vision of exactly what it is.

2. Set a deadline.

Often we procrastinate because we do not give ourselves a set time to complete a task. Write down a reasonable time frame in which you feel you can complete your goal. And stick to it.

4 Steps to Begin Branding Yourself

4 Steps to Begin Branding Yourself

Branding yourself in the marketplace is much more than just a jazzy logo or slogan and it’s certainly more than just a unique color scheme. Branding yourself is a process that is going to require you to utilize some critical thinking skills. Below are the initial steps that and start up business or solo entrepreneur needs to take in order to start creating a successful brand image.

Step 1: Study Your Competition

One of the keys to branding yourself is to separate your message from the competition. You will need to know how the marketplace views your competition. You need to recognize how your competitors differentiate themselves from others. Also, you should know your competitor’s strengths and weaknesses. Once you begin to see a consistent pattern of similar shortcomings that your competitors share amongst one another make notes. Look to see how your services or products can fill that void in the marketplace. Your business can benefit from knowing this information by learning from their weaknesses, and learning how to differentiate your company from the competition.

Step 2: Assess Your Strengths

Now that you know your competition’s weaknesses you can begin to focus on cultivating your company’s strengths. Perform a target market analysis, learn from it, and use it to your advantage. This is a useful tool to confirm your company’s strengths are in fact important to your target market. Once you’ve realized your strengths, and what strengths are important to customers, you can think about ways to successfully market these to the public and involve them in your branding campaign.

Step 3: Think From the Marketplace

It’s time to really learn more about your target demographic. Look at their purchasing behavior. How often do they buy? Do they buy only during sales or promotions? Do they buy an array of products or services or just a select few? These are questions you should ask to better market to your customers. Knowing your customer’s lifestyles, needs, mindsets, and attitudes is going to be very useful information in how you form a successful marketing message. Identifying all of your target customers’ problems, ailments, and dilemmas, are going to be the cornerstones to selling them the solutions and branding yourself.

Step 4: Be Your Brand

This is magical element of branding yourself. It’s the part that education or money can’t buy.

Be authentic. I can’t tell you how many people are out here are selling products and services that they don’t even use or believe in.  It’s easy to fake it on the internet, but actually living up to your company’s standards will have your company standing head and shoulders above the rest. Make sure your company truly represents what your brand identifies you with. For example, if one of the traits of your company’s brand is to always be sharp and dress the part; then be sharp and dress nice. This means every employee from the receptionist all the way up to the CEO needs to dress for success every day. No exceptions. Consistently walk, breathe, and embody the essence of your marketing message on daily basis.

Time to get that notebook out and get to work boss ladies! See you on the next post!

Written by Christine Kane

If you dig up some of my early music career photographs, you’ll find me standing in an alley. I’m usually wearing a bulky

jacket and black boots. Typically, a friend was taking the photo, and I just wanted to get the whole damn thing over with. I didn’t think it was worth spending the money to get a good photograph.

Boy was I wrong.

One year, encouraged by my coach, I consciously chose to Uplevel my approach to my work and my music. I invested in a great photographer.
